The EU-School dairy programme

What is the EU School dairy programme?

EU-School dairy is a nationwide scheme for primary and secondary schools, developed and financed by the European Union since 2009. The schools receive two portions of dairy for participating schoolchildren per week for a period of 20 weeks in the schoolyear (November – April). The programme’s aims are:

  • stimulating healthy consumption of schoolchildren;
  • educating children about healthy eating habits;

Participating schools

EU-Schooldairy is meant for schoolchildren of primary and secondary schools and those of special needs primary and secondary schools. Most schools in the Netherlands have participated at least once in the EU-Schoolprogramme since 2009.

Programme components

In addition to promoting dairy consumption in schoolchildren, another component is educating them about healthy and sustainable eating patterns. This nutrition education is part of the broader Taste Lessons programme.

Programma organisation

The EU-Schooldairy Programme is funded by the European Union. The Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) and Wageningen University & Research (WUR) implement the programme on behalf of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Nature.

RVO monitors the proper implementation of the programme and assigns suppliers to schools. WUR, acting as the support centre, is responsible for communication, registration, and education throughout the programme. The suppliers handle the procurement and transport of the dairy deliveries.
